What is the Flute?
The flute is a wind instrument played by blowing air across/over a mouthpiece to channel air into a tube, causing vibrations that are amplified through the cylindrical chamber. Different note pitches are achieved by pressing keys on the body of the flute, which opens and closes holes in the instrument to make the tube longer or shorter.
How hard is it to learn?
Initial stages of learning how to play a flute can be difficult, as players will require practice to acquire the technique needed to blow the flute in the correct manner to produce sounds. This process can leave the player prone to light-headedness while playing, as the forceful breathing to continue playing can lead to excess oxygen levels in the body. Thus, players must train their mouth muscles and lungs to properly regulate their breath usage and to produce a clearer sound. Different notes can be learned via fingering, which will also require practice. Additionally, the initial instrument cost will be a commitment, and while prices may vary due to the material and make, a brand-new beginner flute can range from $200 to $500.
Why should I learn it?
The flute has a bright piercing tone that can be both gentle, yet assertive. It is incredibly popular in orchestras and wind ensembles with its unique ethereal sound. Due to the similar playing method, it is possible to transition to other flute-like instruments such as the piccolo.
